The Irish Countryman, Arensberg, Conrad
1 Arensberg, Conrad The Irish Countryman
American Museum Science Books 1968 Softcover Very Good
Interior clean and tight, no marks other than name written inside front cover, a little soiling outer edge of pages. Cover has light edgewear and light creasing. ; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; One of the great ethnographies of our time. Arensberg's subject is the countryman at work. How does he make his livelihood in the Irish countryside? What is the work he does, and what are his incentives and rewards? This classic anthropological study of Ireland is the definitive work on the distinctive Irish peasant, his rural customs, beliefs, and way of life. First published in 1936, this book offers an introduction to Irish life, to Irish rural custom, and to the interwoven causes and effects explaining the cultural system and the values that hold it together. Facts on File 1998 0816031088 / 9780816031085 Softcover Very Good+
Ex-library book, but still in excellent condition - spine sticker (could be removed) and a few internal ex-lib markings. Pages clean and tight. Cover has light scuffing and a little bumping of spine ends. No jacket as issued. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 256 pages; The Encyclopedia of Mummies covers all aspects of this interesting and fascinating topic. By defining the term in its broadest sense to include both those mummies created by natural means and those formed by artificial means, author Brier has produced a volume to meet a growing interest. Entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from one paragraph to several columns, though the average length is approximately 350 words. The encyclopedia includes information on mummies from around the world, from ancient and medieval times to the modern day. Readers may be surprised to learn that Lenin and Eva Peron are considered mummies, as is naval hero John Paul Jones. In addition to historical figures, Brier includes mummies from both film and literature. Abbott and Costello and the Three Stooges all have had mummy encounters, though Boris Karloff remains, perhaps, the most famous interpreter of the horror-movie mummy. There are definitions and descriptions of the artificial mummification process, as well as those conditions that cause the natural mummification of corpses. Ethical issues surrounding the display of mummies are discussed in the entry ethics and mummies. Black-and-white illustrations enhance the text. Two appendixes, a list of mummy films, and a list of collections divided into Egyptian and non-Egyptian mummies follow the entries. The extensive bibliography of more than 1,000 items includes both English-and non-English-language books and articles, sorted geographically and, for some areas, by topic, such as mummification process and children's books. Before Europeans came to North America they had no guns, no horses, no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence - little bits of stone and bone and pottery, refuse heaps and firepits, ancient villages and burials, finger prints and prehistoric blood. Yet theirs is a long and triumphant story of survival, a story that is even now just beginning to be told. " [415-noto]

IN SEARCH OF THE IMMORTALS Mummies, Death and the Afterlife, Howard Reid
10 Howard Reid IN SEARCH OF THE IMMORTALS Mummies, Death and the Afterlife
Headline Book Publishing 1999 0747275556 / 9780747275558 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket
Ex-library book, but still in great condition - laminated cover and usual ex-lib type markings. Pages are clean and tight, one earmark seen. Jacket has light scuffing. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 307 pages; Review: "This vivid, sympathetic account of the world's mummy-making cultures contributes much to the mummy trade, which does such a brisk business these days in books and on programs like National Geographic Explorer and the Discovery Channel that it might seem that there is nothing left to say. Another recent contribution to the genre, Heather Pringle's outstanding The Mummy Congress (Forecasts, May 21) , will likely garner more attention this summer, but for its freshness and sensitivity, Reid's should do very well also. Reid, a documentary filmmaker and anthropologist living in England, sets out for exotic regions and vivifies ancient mummy-making cultures, artfully blending living and dead voices. He cites ancient scribes like Herodotus, Tacitus and the Babylonian author of the Gilgamesh epic, alongside accounts of and by the living descendents of mummy makers. Primarily, he seeks to understand "the paths that [these cultures] may have intended to tread beyond life" by examining "the bodies themselves, their attire and tomb accoutrements." Reid visits with the Maku in the Amazon to unravel the mystery of the Chinchorros of Peru, whose mummifying culture predates Egypt's. At a winter camp in southwest Siberia, he learns about the burial rites of the Kazakh nomads' warlord ancestors. He investigates the bog bodies of northern Europe; the peoples who established the Silk Route in China, whose mummies show evidence of an ancient European influence in the East; and the Guanches of the Canary Islands, who shared unexpected cultural links with the Egyptians. This intellectual adventure story focuses as much on life as on death; indeed, the way a culture regards death, the author implies, says much about how it regards life. (Aug. ) Forecast: The Mummy Congress might steal this book's thunder, which would be a shame, as this deserves wide readership. " [650]

Popular images of India women range from the submissive bride behind her veil to the powerful, active women of politics. In this lively and unique book, Patricia and Roger Jeffery present a different perspective on women's lives. Focusing on the mundane rather than the exotic, they explore the complex interplay between the power of social structures to constrain individuals and the ways women negotiate these constraints to carve out places for themselves. Based on information collected by the authors during their research in villages in Bijnor District, western Uttar Pradesh, the volume offers eight life histories of Hindu and Muslim women. The women's life histories present a variety of class positions and domestic circumstances, illustrating many aspects of north Indian village life.... ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Clean, tight condition. Pages are clean and unmarked. Cover has very light edgewear and a little scuffing/rubbing to edges. ; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 222 pages; "How does city life change the way we act? What accounts for the increasing prevalence of violence and anxiety in our world? In this edition of his controversial 1969 bestseller, The Human Zoo, renowned zoologist Desmond Morris argues that many of the social instabilities we face are largely a product of the artificial, impersonal confines of our urban surroundings. Indeed, our behavior often startlingly resembles that of captive animals, and our developed and urbane environment seems not so much a concrete jungle as it does a human zoo. Animals do not normally exhibit stress, random violence, and erratic behavioruntil they are confined. Similarly, the human propensity toward antisocial and sociopathic behavior is intensified in todays cities. Morris argues that we are biologically still tribal and ill-equipped to thrive in the impersonal urban sprawl. As important and meaningful today as it was a quarter-century ago, The Human Zoo sounds an urgent warning and provides startling insight into our increasingly complex lives. " [140-osl]
