SEXUAL METAMORPHOSIS An Anthology of Transsexual Memoirs, Ames, Jonathan (Editor)
1 Ames, Jonathan (Editor) SEXUAL METAMORPHOSIS An Anthology of Transsexual Memoirs
Vintage Books 2005 1400030145 / 9781400030149 First Edition Softcover New
New & unread, no markings. 319 pages. B/w photos. "But who could describe my fright when, on the next morning, I awoke and found myself feeling as if completely changed into a woman? Case 129, Autobiography, from Psychopathia Sexualis, a Medico-Forensic Study by Richard Von Krafft-Ebing. At the time the passage above was written, people who felt trapped in the wrong gender automatically became case-studies. Today they become the men and women they always felt they were. Transsexuals test our notions of what it is to be male or female and, more provocatively, what it means to be one self as opposed to another. Their stories, says Jonathan Ames, hold the appeal of an adventurer's tale. In Sexual Metamorphosis, Ames presents the personal narratives of seventeen gender pioneers. LIVES IN CONTEXT The Art of Life History Research, Ardra L. Cole
3 Ardra L. Cole LIVES IN CONTEXT The Art of Life History Research
AltaMira Press 2001 0759101442 / 9780759101449 First Edition Softcover Very Good-
Cover has light scuffing and light edge/corner wear. Pages are all intact and clan, however numerous pages have yellow highlighting, somewhat less towards rear of book. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 272 pages; The reflexive turn in qualitative research has transformed the process of doing life history research. No longer are research subjects examined through the lens of the all-knowing but supposedly invisible researcher. As Ardra Cole and Gary Knowles point out in this fresh introduction to conducting life history research, the process is now one of mutuality, empathy, sensitivity and caring. The authors carry the novice researcher through the steps of conducting life history research-- from conceptualizing the project to the various means of presenting results-- with an eye toward understanding the complex relationship between participant and researcher and how that shapes the project. In addition to examples from their own research, Cole and Knowles bring in the work of a dozen novice researchers who explain the challenges they faced in developing their own life history projects in a wide variety of settings. Well written, interesting, and pedagogically sound, LIVES IN CONTEXT is the ideal text for teaching life history research to students and an important reference for the bookshelf of all qualitative researchers. Only light wear overall, light soiling outer edge of pages, interior clean and unmarked. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; 315 pages; "Taking a feminist perspective on a subject encumbered by the ponderous weight of societal mores and cultural expectations, Avakian's collection illustrates how meal preparation remains a meaningful expression of emotional connections and a creative way to communicate. In stories, essays, and recipes, women reminisce about food to reveal a myriad of highly charged meanings. Personal reflections illustrate the metaphorical warmth a kitchen environment generates, strengthening familial ties. Representing well-known as well as emerging writers, this wide-ranging collection delineates just how food sustains ties that bind and provides satisfying reminders of the choices women have today." JOINT VENTURING, Beamish, Paul W
8 Beamish, Paul W JOINT VENTURING
Charlotte, NC Information Age Publishing 2008 1593119658 / 9781593119652 First Edition Softcover New
New book, no markings. 167 pages. B/w illustrations. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 167 pages; This short, reader-friendly book is about best practice in joint ventures: the factors and processes which lead to success. Every year, corporations establish thousands of joint ventures (JVs) , investing hundreds of billions of dollars. In fact, between 25% and 40% of all foreign investments take place via equity JVs. The use of JVs and strategic alliances has been rapidly growing. I've worked as a joint venture facilitator for Fortune 500 and other corporations for many years. The senior executives in these organizations often noted that the decision-making format I used with them would make a great book. This is it. The key purpose of the book is to demonstrate that joint ventures can work. They require however an open mind, and the willingness to work through a series of questions I provide. These relate to: testing the strategic logic; partnership and fit; shape and design; and operating the JV. Contrary to the perceptions of some, JVs can be just as profitable and survive just as long as wholly owned subsidiaries. They can in fact be effectively managed, and they are not going to cause a firm to lose its proprietary technology. Partnerships can work extremely well, and often, placing less emphasis on "control" is the way to go. If one is willing to acknowledge and respect that someone else (here a partner) has much to contribute, a stronger enterprise can result. True JVs can result in more stable and sustainable business, benefiting all partners, in whatever country they are located. The format of the book is intentionally conversational. It uses the Socratic method (question, answer, question, answer) which works so effectively in a case study classroom. Here the "classroom" is several business class seats on an international flight. This book is written for practicing managers and executives. Those contemplating the formation of a JV and those currently engaged in JVs will see improvement in the duration and performance of their collaborative ventures by following the recommended actions. A second audience is business schools and academics. The book is ideal for MBA, executive MBA and non-degree executive education courses or modules focused on JVs, alliances, cooperative strategies, etc. (*lower shipping options avail to some locations) [275-osl]

Very nice condition - clean and unmarked other than one light stain upper edge, very light edge/corner wear. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; "Bennett's metaphor for each human being's own way of looking at life is a "lens. " He shows how this concept is useful in understanding relationships, careers and life itself. For example, he outlines exercises for seeing the world through someone else's lens as a way of resolving conflicts. He also describes the world's great traditions as attempts to correct the lens's distortion: science tries to right things by "objectivizing" the world through statistics, double-blind studies and the like while Oriental religion seeks to clear the lens by ceasing its activity. Bennett's preferred approach is the shamanic tradition (and what he sees as its modern continuation, Jungian analysis) , which interprets the lens's dreams and visions to guide one through life. Bennett's ideas are intelligent and well-stated...." (300os)

How did the people of early modern Europe experience it, what was it, and what was its place in their culture? ......; 8vo; The news essays in this collection illustrate the latest trends in witchcraft research and in cultural history in general. After three decades in which the social analysis of witchcraft accusations has dominated the subject, they turn instead to its significance and meaning as a cultural phenomenon? To the "languages" of witchcraft, rather than its causes. As a result, witchcraft seems less startling than it once was, yet more revealing of the world in which it occurred. "
