THROUGH THE KITCHEN WINDOW: Women Expore the Intimate Meanings of Food and Cooking, Avakian, Arlene Voski (editor)
1 Avakian, Arlene Voski (editor) THROUGH THE KITCHEN WINDOW: Women Expore the Intimate Meanings of Food and Cooking
Boston Beacon Press 1997 0807065080 / 9780807065082 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket

Only light wear overall, light soiling outer edge of pages, interior clean and unmarked. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; 315 pages; "Taking a feminist perspective on a subject encumbered by the ponderous weight of societal mores and cultural expectations, Avakian's collection illustrates how meal preparation remains a meaningful expression of emotional connections and a creative way to communicate. In stories, essays, and recipes, women reminisce about food to reveal a myriad of highly charged meanings. Personal reflections illustrate the metaphorical warmth a kitchen environment generates, strengthening familial ties. Representing well-known as well as emerging writers, this wide-ranging collection delineates just how food sustains ties that bind and provides satisfying reminders of the choices women have today." Phelan, a professor of economics at Harvard, and Burnham, a biology professor at UCLA, focus not on the mechanisms of particular genes but on the effects of more general evolutionary patterns. In this enormously entertaining sociobiological overview, they argue that humans are well adapted to the environment in which we originated, but since we are no longer hunter-gatherers, instincts that evolved under those conditions can lead to harmful excess in today's world...." MATTER AND CONSCIOUSNESS, Churchland, Paul
5 Churchland, Paul MATTER AND CONSCIOUSNESS
MIT Press 1986 0262530503 / 9780262530507 Softcover Good;
Cover has moderate edge/corner wear, some creasing. About the first 1/3 of pages have some highlighting, rest of pages are clean and unmarked. B/w illus. 164 pages. In Matter and Consciousness, Paul Churchland clearly presents the advantages and disadvantages of such difficult issues in philosophy of mind as behaviorism, reductive materialism, functionalism, and eliminative materialism. Churchland organizes and clarifies the new theoretical and experimental results of the natural sciences for a wider philosophical audience, observing that this research bears directly on questions concerning the basic elements of cognitive activity and their implementation in real physical systems. (How is it, he asks, that living creatures perform some cognitive tasks so swiftly and easily, where computers do them only badly or not at all? ) Most significant for philosophy, Churchland asserts, is the support these results tend to give to the reductive and the eliminative versions of materialism. Paul M. Churchland is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego. (os); 8vo

Man, as an actor, is born into different ethnic groups with distinct features call "makeups".....Despite the role one portrays, it is how one acts that makes one a hero, a villain, or a victim. 17 Kauffman, Stuart AT HOME IN THE UNIVERSE The Search for the Laws of Self-Organization and Complexity

LIght scuffing to jacket, minmal edgewear. There is an inscription on first endpage, and an Oxford University Press stamp on 2nd endpage, stating that the copy is presented for review. Reviews: The best treatment I have yet encountered about how order emerges naturally -- and possibly even necessarily -- out of chaos. Profoundly important, and considerably more informed than better-known pop-science treatments of chaos theory. Very highly recommended. Steven Jay Gould: Kauffman has done more than anyone else to supply the key missing piece of the propensity for self-organization that can join the random and the deterministic forces of evolution in a satisfactory theory of life's order. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall

Book of Ki : Co-Ordinating Mind and Body in Daily Life, Koichi Tohei
19 Koichi Tohei Book of Ki : Co-Ordinating Mind and Body in Daily Life
Tokyo Japan Publications, Inc. 1989 0870403796 / 9780870403798 Tenth Printing Softcover Near Fine
1989 reprint. Very nice condition. Pages clean and unmarked, light age tanning to page edges. Cover has slight corner/edge wear and old price sticker on rear. The principles of Ki lie in bringing to light man's natural strength and his (her) hidden natural abilities. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall;

Review: "A Good Introduction to Ki ...... Book of Ki is a good basic introduction to the use of energy and how your mind and body work. It contains many useful and instructional photographs and does a good job of explaining what ki is and how it works. It stays away from a lot of the more mystical aspects and is pretty basic. Koichi Tohei states that "To extend Ki you must believe that you are doing so. In other words, you must use your mind positively." Many books lead you to believe that Ki is some mystical force that only comes from special training, but this book explains that it has a lot to do with your mind and your intention, and then goes on to give you basic instructions to begin to develop the use of this energy which we all have access to. A good introduction and worth reading if you have any interest in this part of the martial arts." (315os,0514)

20 Malachowski, Alan RICHARD RORTY
Princeton University Press 2002 0691057087 / 9780691057088 First Edition Softcover New
New book, sealed in shrink wrap. ; Philosophy Now Series; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 200 pages; Richard Rorty is one of the world's most influential living thinkers. He is notorious for contending that the traditional, foundation-building and truth-seeking ambitions of systematic philosophy should be set aside in favor of a more pragmatic, conversational, hermeneutically guided project. This challenge has not only struck at the heart of philosophy but has ricocheted across other disciplines, both contesting their received self-images and opening up new avenues of inquiry in the process. Alan Malachowski provides an authoritative overview of Rorty's considerable body of work and a general assessment of his impact both within philosophy and in the humanities more broadly....
