Profusely illustrated in b/w & colour. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 223 pages; "The six accessible essays in this richly illustrated volume--companion to an exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum and the Indianapolis Museum of Art--examine John Ruskin's activities as Victorian art critic and moral sage. Ruskin scholar Robert Hewison explores how the critic's encounter with paintings by Renaissance masters led to his loss of religous faith. Brown University professor George Dandow scrutinizes the sermonizing language with which Ruskin urged readers to sharpen their own perceptive powers. Yale art historian Casteras discusses Ruskin's creation in 1871 of a utopian guild to govern Saint George's Museum in Sheffield, England. Other essays deal with Ruskin's high aspirations for modern art, his passion for geology and his drawings, which were a stimulus to his thought. Nearly 180 plates (40 in color) show paintings by Ruskin himself as well as by Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, J. M. W. Turner and others. LOST AND FOUND TRADITIONS Native American Art 1965-1985, Coe, Ralph T.
11 Coe, Ralph T. LOST AND FOUND TRADITIONS Native American Art 1965-1985
Vancouver, B. C. Douglas & Mcintyre 1988 0888946252 / 9780888946256 First Edition Softcover Very Good
Ex-library book, but still in quite good condition - sturdy laminated cover and usual ex-lib type markings. Page are clean and tight, profusely illustrated in b/w and colour. Light edgewear and some rough edges to laminate on covers, a little soiling to outer edge of pages. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 288 pages; From Publishers Weekly: Contemporary American Indian arts and crafts are sometimes dismissed as a pale reflection of a once-great art form. Coe, who spent eight years crisscrossing North America, meeting Indian artists and collecting their works, disproves this viewpoint. A rich legacy of tribal tradition lives on in modern textiles, masks, carvings, jewelry and sacred objects, as revealed in the 400 artworks reproduced in this catalogue of a touring exhibition. When a Makah Indian in Washington State carves a painted box in the shape of a wolf's head, he rediscovers an age-old form and, in so doing, experiences a sense of pride and shared values. Visiting scores of tribes, Coe discovered an art community, a loose network of weavers, craft classes, singers, carvers. Examples in this revelatory volume range from a Pueblo dance-skirt decorated with mystical life symbols to a Cheyenne bird-feather fan whose iridescent colors mirror the peyote ceremony.... OFF THE PEDESTAL New Women in the Art of Homer, Chase, and Sargent, Connor, Holly Pyne (editor)
13 Connor, Holly Pyne (editor) OFF THE PEDESTAL New Women in the Art of Homer, Chase, and Sargent
Rutgers University Press 2006 0813536979 / 9780813536972 First Edition Softcover Very Good+
Ex-library book, but still in great condition - sturdy laminated cover and usual ex-lib type markings. Pages clean and tight, no markings. Cover has light scuffing and slight edgewear. Beautifully illustrated in colour and b/w. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 176 pages; Pictures of women portrayed as professional, athletic, and intellectual seem common to us today, but until the late nineteenth century, such representations of strong, self-reliant women were virtually, if not completely, absent from the visual arts and literature. Off the Pedestal is the first book to explore the radical change that occurred in the representation of women immediately after the Civil War. Three critical essays draw on the visual culture of the period to show how the collapse of slavery in the United States brought issues of subordination and autonomy to the surface for women in much the same way that it did for blacks. As women began attending college in greater numbers, entering professions previously dominated by men, and demanding greater personal freedom, these "new women" were featured more frequently in the visual arts and in a manner that made it clear that they had ambitions outside the domestic sphere. The complexity and pervasiveness of these women fascinated many of the most well known painters, illustrators, and writers of the time, including Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase, Charles Dana Gibson, Henry James, Edith Wharton, and William Dean Howells. The women represented in works by these and other artists reflected those who, in life, were becoming liberated from the confines of the home and the sole company of their husbands and children. They were portrayed riding bicycles, hiking in the mountains, reading books and newspapers, and working as professionals. The depiction of female self-reliance, however, was not uniform throughout all visual media. Although painters and authors tended to portray these women positively, illustrators and photographers often vilified or satirized them. Among these negative stereotypes one could find the "manly" new woman-a contested figure whose appearance in journalism and elsewhere pointed to underlying social anxiety and demonstrated a widespread backlash against female empowerment. The medical community also condemned new women by arguing that females who studied or exercised vigorously would become sick, insane, or even sterile, thus threatening the welfare of the country. Featuring more than seventy color and black-and-white images, Off the Pedestal is an engaging and informative window into the ways that identities and attitudes are forged on the stage of visual culture. The book will accompany the traveling exhibition of the same name, which will open at the Newark Museum in the spring of 2006. (775)

Inspired Halifax - the Art of Dusan Kadlec, Dusan Kadlec; Cynthia Mahoney
19 Dusan Kadlec; Cynthia Mahoney Inspired Halifax - the Art of Dusan Kadlec
Halifax, NS Nimbus Publishing Limited 2003 1551094606 / 9781551094601 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Excellent condition, hardcover and jacket fine. Oblong book - 10 x 11 in. Hardcover clean and unmarked. Jacket has no tears, light scuffing/light scratches to rear. Beautifully illustrated in colour. ; Oblong 4to 9" - 11" tall; 90 pages; In the time honoured tradition of the Old Masters, Dusan Kadlecís paintings are both simple and profound. His many paintings transcend being simply illustrative or representational art. Instead his art evokes within us a sense of nostalgia for bygone Halifax. This feeling for 19th century Halifax is not merely the consequence of his chosen subject matter, but rather a very conscious effort by the artist to romantically portray the mood, the atmosphere, the very essence of a place and time. Through his unique and immediately recognizable style, his old world lighting, texture, and obvious attention to every detail, Dusan Kadlec manages to convey the viewer to another era. This is one of the things that make his work so broadly and genuinely appealing. He not only presents us with an insight into our past; he somehow leaves us with the impression that he has actually been there and perhaps more importantly that in some way he has managed to take us there for a moment as well. Dusan Kadlecís compassionate studies, meticulously researched through extensive archival sources, have become highly sought after and are now considered by numerous collectors around the world to be the standard to attain in this type of painting. His vivid canvases of nineteenth and early twentieth century life in historic Halifax continue to win an ever-increasing number of fans. The old port cityís urban and maritime heritage has been preserved for future generations. (690-0514)
